Why Chinese is easier than you think

English makes you memorize rules. Chinese just makes sense.

Verbs never change. Ever.

Eat, ate, eaten — English makes you memorize three forms of every verb. In Chinese, 吃 is always 吃. Yesterday, today, tomorrow — same word, zero conjugation. Add a time word and you're done.

昨天吃 yesterday, ate
今天吃 today, eat
明天吃 tomorrow, will eat

Ten characters. Ninety-nine numbers.

English has a new word for eleven, twelve, twenty, thirty... Chinese just combines ten digits like building blocks. Learn 一 through 十 and you can already count to ninety-nine.

一 one
二 two
三 three
十一 eleven = ten-one

He, she... same sound.

他 and 她 sound exactly the same — 100 million native speakers mix them up in speech every day and nobody notices. One of the "hardest" parts of Chinese turns out to barely matter when you're talking, not typing.

他 he — /tɑː/
她 she — /tɑː/
我们 we — /wɔː mən/
